The Indonesian destinations of Bali and Lombok are just a 20-minute flight apart. Sister islands they may be, but they certainly aren’t twins.
The contrasts between the two make for an ideal twin centre holiday. Religion is the first difference you’ll notice. Bali is the largest Hindu outpost in the world after India, whilst Lombok, like most of Indonesia, is Muslim. Diversity is the key to Bali; you have the beaches, the forests around the Ayung River, the art centre of Ubud, volcanoes, shopping, bars and restaurants. Plenty to keep you occupied. Lombok, on the other hand is about relaxation – idyllic beaches and snorkelling around the Gili islands.
Bali has a plethora of world-class hotels, including 3 Aman resorts, 2 Four Seasons properties and several others including the Legian, Begawan Giri and the new Bulgari resort. All of which makes the choice of where to stay a real difficulty. However, on Lombok it has to be the Oberoi, simply heavenly.
Lombok is the classic Indian Ocean beach destination; everything on the wish list is ticked off; palm tree lined beaches, crystal clear warm waters, sumptuous accommodation and excellent food. A few nights here after Bali would be the perfect way to relax after sightseeing.
